For more than a century Hong Kong has been one of the places where the world's gold changes hands. Its role today rests on a long trading tradition, open rules and its position next to the largest gold-consuming country.
A trading tradition since 1910
The Chinese Gold and Silver Exchange Society was founded in Hong Kong in 1910. For generations its members traded gold in taels and Hong Kong dollars, and the tael remains the everyday unit in local shops and dealing rooms. Alongside it, the city's banks and dealers trade gold in US dollars per ounce, linking the local market to London, New York and Shanghai.
A free port
Hong Kong charges no customs duty on gold and has no sales tax or VAT. Capital moves freely in and out, and the Hong Kong dollar has been linked to the US dollar since 1983. Together these make the cost of buying, holding and moving gold through the city simple to calculate.
A bridge between time zones
Gold trades around the clock. Hong Kong's trading day sits between the close of New York and the opening of London, so Asian buyers and sellers can deal during their own working hours.
The gateway to mainland China
China is the world's largest consumer of gold. Over many years, large amounts of gold refined in Switzerland and elsewhere have passed through Hong Kong on their way to the mainland, and the city's dealers, vaults and logistics firms have grown around that flow.
Regulation of dealers
Since April 2023, dealers in precious metals and stones who carry out cash transactions of HK$120,000 or more must register with the Customs and Excise Department under Hong Kong's anti-money-laundering law. Registered dealers are required to check the identity of customers in those transactions and keep records.
Looking ahead
In 2025 the Hong Kong government set out plans to develop the city further as an international gold trading centre, including more vault capacity and better trading infrastructure. For buyers, the practical result is a deep local market with many ways to buy, store and sell.
